Vasile Overcomes Age Worries to Secure Finance Role

After losing his job, Vasile, 52, found himself facing an uncertain future. With financial worries weighing heavily on him, he threw himself into job applications, but his age and career change left him questioning whether employers would see his true value. Despite studying for an AAT Level 3 Diploma in Accounting, he feared that younger candidates might have the upper hand.

Feeling disheartened, Vasile joined the Restart Scheme at our High Wycombe office, where he received tailored support to help him rebuild his confidence and refine his job search. Edward, his Employment Adviser, worked closely with him on mock interviews, helping him address concerns about his age and shift the focus onto his skills and experience. Employment Solutions Consultant, Abi, supported him in identifying suitable job opportunities and submitting strong applications.

Vasile took an active role in the workshops available with Tutor Amber, attending multiple sessions that covered everything from mindset coaching to practical job search strategies. With Amber’s guidance, he refined his CV to highlight his accounting qualifications and transferable skills, making it clear why he was a strong candidate. He also practised interview techniques, learning how to confidently explain his career shift and tackle potential employer concerns. The workshops helped Vasile not only improve his applications but also rebuild his self-belief, reassuring him that his experience and dedication were just as valuable as his qualifications.

Through this personalised approach, Vasile went from applying for anything and everything to targeting roles that matched his expertise. With his confidence restored, he successfully secured a Finance Assistant position at a hospice in Berkhamsted—a role that not only aligned with his studies but also provided financial security.
