Thomas’ journey of hope

31/01/2025

When Thomas joined the Restart Scheme in April 2024, he had recently moved into shared accommodation after experiencing homelessness for nearly a year. Despite the challenges he faced, he was polite, open, and determined to move forward.

Living with Complex PTSD, OCD, and depression, Thomas was navigating multiple barriers, including childcare responsibilities and an unstable living situation. Attending in-person appointments wasn’t always possible, so his Adviser Graeme worked flexibly to ensure he could still access the support he needed.

One of the first hurdles we tackled together was replacing his lost ID. Without photo identification, job applications were difficult, so we helped him through the process of securing a new passport. Seeing it arrive in the post was a moment of real progress for Thomas.

With this in place, we worked on building a CV that highlighted his strengths and career goals. Thomas was keen to secure a retail role, so Graeme connected him with our Employer Solutions Consultant, Neelam, who identified promising opportunities.

Just a few weeks later, Thomas called with great news—he had landed two job interviews! To help him make a strong first impression, Fedcap provided interview clothing, including a smart new suit, shoes, and accessories. His confidence grew, and it paid off—Thomas successfully secured a 35-hour-per-week role with William Hill in Feltham.

To support his transition, we covered his first month’s travel costs, ensuring he could get to work without financial strain. Thomas is now settling into his new role with the ongoing support of our In-Work Support team. He knows we’re here whenever he needs us, and we couldn’t be prouder of how far he’s come.
