From Low Confidence to New Beginnings: Noolek’s Journey Back into Work

Noolek and her employment adviser

Noolek joined the Restart Scheme at our Brighton Office, after being unemployed for more than six months and struggling to secure work independently. She faced several barriers that made returning to employment particularly challenging, including low confidence, limited English language skills, poor digital skills, literacy challenges, and communication difficulties.

Although Noolek has lived in the UK for over 20 years, she continued to experience difficulties with English and had very limited experience using digital technology. She had previously worked as a school cleaner for more than 15 years but resigned following a change in management. Returning to the labour market after such a long period proved difficult, as recruitment processes, job searching methods, and employer expectations had changed significantly since she had last looked for work.

When she joined the programme, Noolek did not have a CV, had little understanding of online job searching, and found interviews intimidating and overwhelming. Her lack of confidence and limited digital skills made it difficult for her to access employment opportunities without support.

To help Noolek overcome these barriers, her Employment Adviser provided tailored support focused on building her confidence, employability skills, and independence.

A professional CV was created to highlight her experience and strengths, while regular interview preparation sessions and mock interviews helped her become more comfortable discussing her skills with employers.

Significant support was also provided to improve her digital skills. Due to her limited literacy and confidence with online systems, the Employment Adviser initially completed job applications on her behalf while gradually teaching her how to navigate online platforms and complete applications independently. This approach helped her build both practical skills and confidence over time.

In addition, Noolek worked with our Employer Services Consultant to find local employer opportunities and job fairs. These activities enabled her to engage directly with employers, develop networking skills, and gain confidence in presenting herself professionally.

Following a successful job offer, further support was provided to help her complete her online onboarding process, DBS application, and mandatory training modules through her employer’s online learning platform.

As a result of the support received through the Restart Scheme, Noolek successfully secured employment with Q3. Once clearance is finalised for her DBS, she’ll be able to access additional work sites and return to working within schools.

Noolek has found a supportive workplace where her manager recognises and values her hard work and dedication. Securing employment has had a significant positive impact on her confidence, wellbeing, and overall outlook for the future.

Her journey demonstrates how tailored, personalised support can help individuals overcome multiple barriers to employment, develop new skills, and successfully re-enter the workforce after a long period away from the labour market.
